It is 1941, and in his Kent, England home, novelist Charles Condomine, his second wife, Ruth, and their maid Edith, host a dinner party.

In addition to friends Dr. George Bradman and his wife Violet, spiritualist medium Madame Arcati is invited, and she has been asked to hold an after-dinner séance. Unbeknownst to the medium, this request is for the sole purpose of providing skeptic Charles research into the paranormal.

To the surprise of all, Madame Arcati accidentally summons the spirit of the seven years deceased 1st wife of Charles, Elvira Condomine, who is as mischievous in death as she had been in life. Chaos ensues, and as they all soon learn, getting rid of their uninvited ghostly guest proves to be much more difficult than the summoning!
